Gates left open on the 2008 event.
We have received complaints from farmers/landowners about runners leaving gates open in the Hurstwood/Cant Clough areas (Legs 1 and 2)This has resulted in previously seperated diseased sheep mixing with healthy sheep. This has lead to a possible claim for compensation, a call for future events to be called off and our organisation being called into question which is upsetting after all of the work we put in. This despite a plea at the start for runners to close all gates at all costs. Runners who cannot close gates are not welcome at our events, after all how difficult is it ?. We rely on the goodwill of farmers and landowners and we now have bridges to rebuild thanks to a few mindless individuals.

Safety page.
Given the concerns of some of the teams entered, and of the organisers regarding the possibility of "poor" weather we have added a new page to this site titled "Safety". On this page we have outlined some advice and recommendations to clubs and individuals considering entering the event given the time of year and possible inexperience of teams/individuals entered.

Latest news on the route for 2008
Leg 3.............The official route above Callis Woods has now been changed by the Countryside Agency. For 2008 we will be taking the new waymarked route which shortens this leg and avoids running through the village of Horsehold to join Kilnshaw Lane nearer to Stoodley Pike. After running up the track and around the zig-zags through Callis woods you leave the main track to drop down left to cross a stone packhorse bridge and through a large gate.Previously we had carried straight on through the top of the woods but we now turn right after passing through the gate to follow the waymarked route to join Kilnshaw Lane nearer to Stoodley Pike. This shortens the leg by 0.75m

This section may be marshaled

The Haveys map of the Pennine Bridleway South which includes the Mary Towneley Loop is a better option for teams to use than the OS map. It is much easier to follow and much easier to photocopy the individual legs. This map can be obtained online by visiting the links page on this site.

Leg Records. Leg times for 2004 have been disregarded for legs 3 and 4 where we had "unsafe" times recorded on those legs. The Sportident "dibber" system now used makes times more accurate and easier to collect at changeover points. The new record for leg 3 is partly due to this leg having been shortened for 2008.
